El Zapote H1
H1 is a relatively new varietal in coffee agriculture, a hybrid created to have a high yield while resisting the dreaded ‘leaf rust,’ a fungus that damages coffee plants and leaves a distinctive rust colored spots on the leaves. This varietal is also known as ‘centroamericano,’ as it was made for the high altitude, agroforestry farms in Central America, such as Julio Melendez’s farm in Acatenango, Guatemala: Finca El Zapote.
Finca El Zapote is a farm that is near and dear to our hearts. Julio and his wife Christel are our head roaster Stephanie’s in-laws, and we have had the great honor to visit them on their farm for the past two years running, and we are thrilled to have been able to purchase multiple wonderful coffees from them.
This H1 varietal is extremely sweet and silky, with a clean acidity. The coffee opens with dried fruit and stone fruit acidity like raisin and plum, with a sweetness like cane sugar and an underlying almond nuttiness. Whether you’re sitting on the porch at Finca El Zapote watching a small eruption from Volcán de Fuego, or sitting on your couch watching the Steelers pregame show, this coffee is sure to hit the spot.

MORE ABOUT THIS COFFEE
Finca El Zapote has been in Julio Meléndez’s family for over 100 years. Located in Acatenango, one of Guatemala’s many microclimates centered around a volcano of the same name, the climate here is perfect for coffee growing, with temperatures ranging between 15° and 29° C (59°-84° F), morning sunlight turning to afternoon cloud coverage and mists. Julio records soil tests and weather data related to each lot, which enables him to evaluate correlations between production data and cup quality year over year. Julio grows many varietals, including Bourbon, Caturra, Catimor, Moka, and H1. H1 is relatively new to Finca El Zapote, and early days have Julio very happy with it’s yield, with plans to replace some of his Caturra plots with more H1. Finca El Zapote is focused on sustainability and is certified Rainforest Alliance, UTZ, and 4C.

SHIPPING: We ship orders on Tuesdays and Fridays. Order cutoff is 12pm the day PRIOR to the ship day. If you ever feel your coffee is not fresh enough, just let us know and we’ll replace it.
Domestic shipping is free for orders of $50 or more. Otherwise, it is a $7.50 flat rate anywhere in the US. We ship everything via UPS Ground.
NOTES ON GRINDING: If you choose “French Press” grind, expect it to be finer than usual, so you’re guaranteed good extraction. Some ultra fine coffee particles will make it through the screen and create a flavorful, albeit slightly opaque cup. In other words, we choose flavor over aesthetics. If you want to keep your cup looking cleaner, choose a pour over grind.
If you don’t see your preferred grind in the options then simply let us know in the notes section at checkout and we’d be happy to grind it for your favorite brewing method.
